Our Mission
The Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA) is a Washington DC-based organization that is the focal point for vision, transformation, and growth of the optoelectronics industry. OIDA advances the competitiveness of its members by focusing on the business of technology, not just technology itself.

OIDA's 19th Annual Forum
The Future of Telecom and U.S. Competitiveness
November 16-17, 2010 - Arlington, VA (Washington, DC)
The 1 ½-day 2010 Annual Forum brings together industry, government, and academia to address major issues in the photonics industry. This year's forum focuses on the telecom industry and will feature speakers and presentations from carriers, major industry players, and government agencies. The agenda will also cover global competitiveness, government perspectives, and creation of strategies for real-world solutions. Speakers and attendees represent leading optical technology companies, telecom companies, and internet application providers who will assess and discuss the challenges and opportunities facing optical communications.
The Annual Forum features plenary talks, an industry roundtable, and enhanced programming with over 20 invited presentations from prominent industry and government agency leaders. The Forum also provides one of the best networking opportunities with its breaks, lunches, and an evening reception conducive to meaningful discussions. A poster session by academic researchers from around the U.S. will be at the center of the evening reception.

OIDA Photonic Sensor Symposium
December 8, 2010 - Boston, MA
This one day symposium will focus on the state of the art of distributed fiber optic sensing as well as advanced point sensing technologies. The scope will include oil and gas, energy, homeland security, military, industrial and biomedical applications. Opportunities, barriers, market projections as well sources of funding will be discussed.
The symposium will include presentations by industry experts representing sensing system designers, manufacturers, and end users of sensor technology. A poster session and product demonstrations will be used in conjunction with formal presentations for a broader representation of the technology and products.

- International Optoelectronics Association Meeting
The 15th annual IOA (International Optoelectronics Association) meeting took place on June 9-10, 2010 in Taipei, Taiwan. The meeting was held in conjunction with the Photonics Festival Taiwan (PFT) and hosted most graciously by the Photonics Industry and Technology Development Association (PIDA), our sister organization in Taiwan. PFT is a very large conference and tradeshow of optoelectronic equipment suppliers.
A representative from each IOA member organization gave a presentation summarizing industry trends within their geographic area.
In addition to the IOA meeting, PIDA also organized a forum, "From Green Photonics to Low Carbon Society," at which IOA members discussed their activities in the green photonics arena. Talks presented at this forum are also available on the OIDA website.
- OIDA SSL/Displays and Solar Forum
OIDA's innovative green photonics forums have become a focal point for photonics and optics in the area of sustainability. Our 3rd annual forum on green photonics, held on June 16 & 17, 2010 in Santa Clara, CA, brought together key players involved in developing the technical, business, and government roles of photonics in building a more sustainable and renewable future.

Critical Telecommunications Issues:
The Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA), which represents the community that designs, develops, and manufactures the fiber and optoelectronic components that drive the Internet, is now extremely worried on a number of fronts. These concerns were emphasized at a recent OIDA conference held in Santa Clara, California . The focus of the conference was to discuss how to reach the next generation of optoelectronics that will be necessary to drive the ultra high capacity communications infrastructure in the U.S., from the edge, through the data center, to the core. This was a vertically integrated technical conference that attracted speakers from the communications carriers (AT&T, Verizon), systems companies (Ciena, Cisco, Alcatel), media content providers (Google, Facebook), as well as the optoelectronics components community (JDSU, Finisar, Oclaro).
Issues at the forefront of every sector were:
1. Traffic volume is accelerating rapidly - the networks already cannot cope. Even if everyone was plumbed with high performance broadband, the access times will become frustratingly slow, and we can expect these to slow further during the decade. Technologists are openly debating whether network choking could bring the Internet to a standstill. If it does, we have a national security and economic impact issue.
2. The majority of.......
