OIDA/CIAN Data Center Workshop
Optical Communication Networks: Quantitative Metrics in the Data Center Workshop/Roadmap Report Session

Optical Communication Networks: Quantitative Metrics in the Data Center workshop will quantify metrics related to optical communication within data centers, including projections for those metrics to 2022. The workshop extends the work begun at a two-day October 2011 program that focused on aggregation networks—the networks between end users and longer haul networks. The aim of the March 2012 workshop is to provide useful and coherent benchmarks and targets for system vendors, component suppliers, funding agencies, and other stakeholders in the future communications infrastructure. An outcome of the March 2012 event will be a comprehensive roadmap report that will be distributed to OIDA member companies.
Format: Individual presentations of ~25 minutes with 5 minutes for audience questions, followed by a 45 minute panel discussion (3-4 speakers and a moderator).
Discussion Topics: Panel discussions will focus on quantitative metrics for future data centers, and explore questions such as:
- What will be the data rate and latency requirements in the backplanes?
- What will be the power limitations, at the system level and at the optics?
- How does this translate to system and port cost?
- How will these be affected by future architectures?
These metrics will help identify bottlenecks and future requirements, and direct R&D funding.

Student Poster Session and Competition
The workshop includes and National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsored student poster session. Students whose submissions are selected for presentation receive:
- Free workshop registration
- Travel support
- The opportunity to showcase their work during a dedicated poster session
- An acknowledgement letter and certificate from OIDA
One winner and two finalists will be selected during the Workshop!
How to Participate
Submit your contact information, a brief CV or resume, plus a poster title and abstract that relates to the Workshop theme to Brooke Hirsch (email: bhirsc@osa.org) by 16 February 2012.
Note: The poster should be relevant to the Data Center Workshop topic; the reviewers will look for innovation, creativity and solid proof.
