The Photonic (Fiber Optic) Sensor Consortium began in 2003 and became part of OIDA in 2005. As we move forward, the opportunities for photonic sensors and sensing systems are considerable. To effectively advance the efforts, the OIDA Photonic Sensor Consortium will have to become more formal. As a result, participation in the Consortium will require membership.

If you are not already a member of OIDA, the membership fee is nominal at $500 annually, with no company size limitations. If you are a member of OIDA, there is no fee to participate. However, full OIDA membership provides services and benefits to all the electro-optic markets and is not limited to sensors and includes a number of market development, business development and government relations activities in addition to full access to the Photonic Sensor Consortium materials and activities.

Accomplishments of the Consortium include:

Nearly 70 active participants

  • Government agencies
  • Industry
  • Universities
  • Venture Capitalists

Strong support from

  • NIST
  • The Photonic Technology Access Program (PTAP)
  • The Center for Photonics, Ontario Centres of Excellence

Successfully completed four workshops

  • Fiber Optic Sensors – March 22-23, 2005, Boston
  • Biophotonic Sensors and Smart Fiber Optic Sensor Networks – August 17-18, 2005, Rochester, NY
  • Wide Area Surveillance – Dec 13-14, 2005, Washington, DC
  • Photonic Sensors – June 7, 2007, Ottawa, Canada

Roadmap defined

Completed preliminary work on specifications that will allow us to move forward on standards as well as track broad industry standards activity.

Membership benefits

  • Provide an industry voice
  • Identify and track market dynamics including evolving needs, segmentation, size and barriers
  • Identify government needs and funding opportunities
  • Provide formal roadmapping workshops with discounts for Consortium members
  • Facilitate potential strategic partnerships for technology development
  • Provide assistance in standards activities in conjunction with NIST and other organizations
  • Bi-monthly industry newsletter

We are now at a critical point in the commercialization of photonic sensors with good successes in some market segments, many barriers to overcome and much work to accomplish.
