OIDA Forum Examines Current Conditions in Optoelectronics
First in a three part series looking at key issues for the optoelectronics industry
San Jose, CA, September 11, 2007 - The Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA) today held the first of three Forums examining various aspects of the optoelectronics industry. Perspectives on the Optoelectronics Industry: Advances, Challenges, and Growth Opportunities Forum, sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), looked at several key industries from the perspectives of industry leaders and experts. OIDA’s CEO Michael Lebby also presented the new market forecasts to be released to members later this year in OIDA’s Global Market Review and Forecast.
The two-day forum focused on the current business conditions in these key industry arenas:
- Non-Telecom Applications of High Power Semiconductor Lasers
- Consumer Optoelectronics
- Communications and Service Providers
- Electronic, Photonic, and Life Science Measurements
- High Power Lasers and Applications
- Defense / Homeland Security
- Transportation
These industries have undergone significant changes in the last 5 years, with increased use of outsourcing, changes in business models, differing R&D pipelines, and new capital constraints. The speakers presented their views of the significance of these factors, how their organizations are adapting to compete, and identified the key opportunity areas for the next decade. As part of the forum, the presenters and attendees formed working sessions to develop a consensus view on these key business issues.
"Everything that was done with an electron in the last century will be done with photons in this century," said David Morse, keynote speaker and Senior Vice President & Director of Corporate Research for Corning, Inc. "OIDA has done an outstanding job of assembling a comprehensive slate of speakers describing the businesses that are making this happen."
In addition to the market overview from OIDA, the Forum included talks by a host of industry luminaries. This strong slate of presenters and analysts provided an excellent strategic ‘snapshot’ of the industry for both government and commercial users.
Speakers included:
- Henry Kressel, Managing Director - Warburg Pincus
- Dave Allen, VP & General Manager – Newport
- Giovanni Barbarossa, CTO & Sr. VP of Product Dev. – Avanex
- Jerry Bautista, Director, Technology Management – Intel
- Keith Cambron, President & CEO - AT&T Labs
- Stephen Eglash, Principal – NREL
- John Fan, President & CEO – Kopin
- Waguih Ishak, VP West Coast Research Ctr. – Corning
- Tim Jenks, CEO – Neophotonics
- Ashok Krisnamoorthy, DE/Director - Sun Microsystems
- Ed Murphy, Group Chief Technology Officer – JDSU
- Anders Olsson, Senior VP of Engineering – Finisar
- Rajiv Ramaswami, VP & General Manager, Transceiver Module Group – Cisco
- Jonathan Saint Clair, Associate Technical Fellow – Boeing

- David Welch, Chief Technology and Strategy Officer – Infinera
- Eric Wesoff, Sr. Analyst - Greentech Media
- Hal Zarem, CEO – Silicon Light Machines, and

Two more Forums in the Perspectives series are planned over the next year: "Manufacturing Issues" and "Seeds for Innovations." These three resulting reports will serve as key reference documents for strategic planners in both government and industry for the optoelectronics industry.
