OIDA President and CEO Discusses Solid-State
Lighting Roadmap at AWPS 2007

Dr. Lebby’s plenary talk focuses on the technical and industry advances needed to bring SSL technology to general purpose illumination

Chonju, Korea, 15 March 2007 — The progress of bringing solid state lighting (SSL) to the general purpose illumination market was the topic of the plenary talk presented by OIDA President and CEO Dr. Michael Lebby at the 2007 Third Asia Pacific Workshop on Wide Bandgap Semiconductors on March 12. Presenting OIDA’s Solid State Lighting Roadmap, Dr. Lebby detailed the evolution that OIDA sees coming in the next five to 10 years and highlighted the needed technical and industry advances to make this technology viable. "We’ve seen this market get hot because it is cool," said Dr. Lebby, alluding to the generally high efficiency and low heat generation of SSL. "However, to actually make the leap into mainstream lighting, several key developments still need to happen." Among the developments highlighted in his talk were:

  • Advances in the efficiency of warm white light generation;
  • Improvements in packaging for both heat and light extraction; and
  • More efficient green solid state sources.

Dr. Lebby pointed out that the efficiency needed by the market to achieve market acceptance will be on the order of 150 lm/w in production. This will include significant improvements in internal and external quantum efficiency, better phosphors (especially for warm light and better color rendering), and incremental improvements in light extraction and packaging. Alternative approaches using RGB illumination will need significant improvements especially in the green nitride material efficiency. "This industry is poised at an inflection point," noted Dr. Lebby. "It will be an exciting time for the next 5 years."
